The Praxis of Terra Incognita
Technique & Pigments
Hélène Vance sources raw mineral oxides exclusively from the historic quarries of Roussillon and Morocco. Mixed with cold-pressed Swedish flaxseed oil and bleached beeswax, each passage is applied in sculpted impasto gestures that cure over six months into a structural relief that captures directional light in physical space.
Provenance & Record
Created in Vance’s Rue Bonaparte studio in autumn 2024 as the centerpiece of her solo survey. Exhibited at the Grand Palais Éphémère for the Paris Autumn Vernissage. Consigned directly from the artist’s private inventory, accompanied by all preliminary tempera sketches and archival museum registry records.
Conservation Protocol
Rated for ASTM Lightfastness Category I (150+ years unshifted chromacity). Optimal climate display conditions: 19°C – 22°C with relative indoor humidity between 45% and 55%. Safe for museum spotlighting up to 250 lux without thermal stress or pigment dry-shrinkage.
